Orchard CMS 1.7 is hopefully due out next week and I have been blogging numerous Orchard Tutorials on what to expect in Orchard 1.7. One of the new features in Orchard 1.7 you may find useful as an Orchard Developer is the ability to run Orchard Recipes from the Orchard Administrator Dashboard. Normally Orchard Recipes were only available as part of the intial Orchard installation, but now you can access and execute Orchard Recipes from within the dashboard!
When you install and run Orchard CMS 1.7 and navigate to the "Modules" section in the Orchard Dashboard, you will notice a new "Recipes" Tab in addition to the familar "Features", "Installed", and "Gallery" tabs. The Orchard Recipes tab lists out all the recipes available to the Orchard Website along with the ability to execute those Orchard Recipes on demand.
Although you have the ability to run Orchard Recipes from the administrator dashboard it is not necessarily advisable to do so. For example, running an Orchard Recipe that is part of the Orchard Setup will often cause undesirable effects. These recipes are intended to be run on Orchard CMS installation and running them will cause sample widgets and content items to be added to your Orchard Website.
However, running custom Orchard Recipes on demand can be a huge benefit in terms of productivity. In the example above, I have created a custom Orchard Module that contains two recipes for turning your website online and offline. These recipes, developed for Orchard Training purposes, run a number of commands and processes that allow Orchard Developers and Orchard Website Owners to make it easy to enable a maintenance mode for their Orchard Websites in instances where they need to "turn off" the website during maintenance periods. This is just one example, however, as the possibilities are endless!
I was hoping Orchard CMS 1.7 would have been released during the Orchard Harvest Developer Conference in Amsterdam, but it turns out there are still a few bugs that need to be fixed. Orchard 1.7 should be released next week ( fingers crossed ), however, so in the meantime you can check out a few Orchard CMS 1.7 Tutorials that I have written:
